It was revealed in Parliament today that the government is working to legislate to introduce a procedure of house arrest as an answer to the serious problem of prison overcrowding. (Sri Lanka Latest News)
Minister of State for Justice and Prisons Anuradha Jayaratne said this while replying to an oral question asked by Member of Parliament Imran Maharuf about overcrowding in prisons.
Minister Jayaratne revealed that Sri Lanka’s prisons have a maximum capacity of 13,000 inmates and the current capacity is 29,000.
