Dr. Deepal Perera, a paediatrician at Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital in Colombo, informed ‘Mawrata’ that the current widespread respiratory virus, which presents with symptoms like fever, cough, and vomiting, can severely affect heart muscles if not properly managed. He emphasized that working through the illness without adequate rest could lead to serious complications, including death.
Dr. Perera advised the public to wear face masks and seek medical treatment to prevent the virus from spreading. He highlighted the importance of extra caution for children under 12, the elderly over 60, and those with pre-existing conditions, as they are more susceptible to severe outcomes such as pneumonia.
