The five-member forensic medical committee appointed by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court to submit the final conclusion regarding whether the death of the Janashakti Group’s director and business leader Dinesh Shafter was a murder or suicide started its discussion session today (23) at the Peradeniya University Faculty of Medicine. As a serious problem had arisen before the court regarding whether the death of Dinesh Shafter was a murder or a suicide, this committee was appointed in accordance with an order made by the Colombo Additional Magistrate Rajindra Jayasuriya on February 17 to present a list of academic experts based on the highest seniority in the field of forensic medicine to obtain a decision from a scientific approach.
These experts had reached Kandy yesterday evening. This expert panel, consisting of the five most senior judicial experts in Sri Lanka, will conduct a sharp scientific analysis of the cause of Dinesh Shafter’s death today and tomorrow by reviewing the scientific data files and research reports received so far in connection with this death.
According to the request of this five-member forensic expert committee, a review of the information test reports sent to the government’s forensic department and high standard laboratories will also be conducted in these two days to investigate the scientific factors beyond the data obtained so far in Dinesh Shafter’s second forensic post-mortem examination conducted at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital.
Then the five-member committee will give the final recommendation to the court on the basis of medical facts whether the cause of Dinesh Shafter’s death is suicide or murder.
The five-member panel of medical experts appointed by the court includes Professor Dinesh Fernando, forensic medicine specialist of the Peradeniya University Faculty of Medicine Department of Forensic Science, Professor Asela Mendis, forensic medicine specialist of the Colombo University Forensic Science Department, Professor U.C.D Perera, forensic medicine specialist of the Forensic Science Department of the Ruhunu University Medical School, former forensic doctor of the Kandy National Hospital. S. Shiva Subramaniam, Galle Karapitiya Hospital Specialist Forensic medical Officer P.R. Ruwanpura is included.
