Most of the ministers representing Tamil Nadu in the central government of India did not have a positive attitude towards Sri Lanka. They stood up for the issues of Tamil people in Sri Lanka. One of the strongest ministers in Manmohan Singh’s Congress government, P. Chidambaram has always spoken about the problems of the Tamil people in Sri Lanka. As the Finance Minister, he pressured the Congress government to find a political solution to the problem of the Tamil people in Sri Lanka. T. Balu was a cabinet minister who represented Tamil Nadu, another strong member of the Congress government. He threatened the Congress government to intervene to stop the war in Sri Lanka.
The current Modi government’s finance minister, Nirmala Sitaram, changed the policy of the central government ministers representing Tamil Nadu. In Modi’s government, she is the finance minister. During Sri Lanka’s economic crisis, she intervened without hesitation to provide assistance to Sri Lanka from IMF. She participated in the IMF negotiations on behalf of Sri Lanka at the request of the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in India, Milinda Moragoda. She offered to speak on behalf of Sri Lana, and she also offered to provide Sri Lanka with the necessary support for debt restructuring.
Recently, she was in agreement with Japan and the Paris Club to restructure Sri Lanka’s debt. When Basil Rajapaksa was the Minister of Finance of Sri Lanka, she offered to give a multi-billion loan for Sri Lanka to recover from the economic crisis. When Ali Sabri became Finance Minister, she requested IMF to assist Sri Lanka. When Ranil Wickremesinghe became the Finance Minister, in order to get loan facility from IMF She agreed to give the letter of intent to IMF. She did not present the Tamil problem in Sri Lanka as a condition. She did not pressurised Modi’s government to present it as a condition. This is how she changed the opinion of the central government ministers representing Tamil Nadu about Sri Lanka.
Sitaram is her name. She rescued Ravana’s homeland. Hanumantha was the one who built the Ramsethu Bridge so that Rama could save Sita from Ravana. It’s an interesting story that Sitaram stepped forward to save Sri Lanka when the government was about to sell Hanumanthas to China.
