To topple the 1964 Mrs Bandaranayake’s government then leader of UNP and the opposition Dudly Senanayaka had reached a secret agreement with the leader of the house C.P.de Silva. That is to make C.P. De Silva the prime minister.
The government was toppled. Dudley wins by a landslide. at the first party leadership meeting after the general election revealed the secret agreement made with C.P.
‘C.P. is the Prime Minister…’ said Dudley. Seniors of UNP were surprised and were downcast.
‘If I hadn’t made this decision we’d still be in opposition,’ said Dudley. C.P. got up
Let’s cancel that agreement. Give me the ministry I used to hold if possible. That’s enough…’ C.P. said.
Tears came to Dudley’s eyes.
Muslim Congress leader Ashraf put forward a condition to support SLFP leader Mrs. Bandaranaike for the 1988 presidential election. That is, the SLFP should not field a candidate in Colombo Central, and the SLFP should support the candidate fielded by the Muslim Congress Party.
Fauzi, Haleem Ishaq, Alavi Maulana and the senior leaders of SLFP fervently opposed this. The lady left Ashraf helplessly. UNP took Ashraf. Presidential candidate Prime Minister Premadasa went to Eastern Province by helicopter. One of the reasons for Premadasa’s victory was the Muslim vote that Ashraf took from the east. The Mrs Bandaranayaka lost.
Chandrika knew this story. She did not tell anyone when she entered into a pact with the Muslim Congress for the 1994 general elections. Only she and Ashraf knew the agreement. After 17 years, SLFP won.
To defeat the budget of Mahinda’s government in 2008, Ranil signed a secret agreement with Mangala-Sripati members of Mahinda’s government. Ranil promised to give Mangala the post of Deputy Prime Minister. Even the party secretary Tissa was not aware of this agreement.
2015 Sri Lanka Freedom Party Secretary Maithripala was proposed for presidential candidacy by party leader Ranil. He proposed this to the working committee after being announced as the common candidate.
That’s how alliances are made to win elections. If you can’t make such alliances, you can stay in the opposition until you die. These old stories come to mind when we see how Sajith is going to form alliances with party approval. Sajith and the alliance is to form a historic alliance with the Freedom National Alliance.
why..is that?
If Ranil had not jumped to the middle and got the prime ministership, the country would be governed today by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya and the Freedom National Assembly, which is a breakaway fraction from the Podujana Peramuna. Rajapaksa and Ranil’s U.N.P. were afraid when they were negotiating to form this coalition government. The Rajapaksa got scared and made Ranil the Prime Minister and lopsided the coalition government.
After Gotabhaya stepped down from the presidency, this alliance came to the fore again. The negotiations were successful. All agreed to make the speaker president for an interim rule. JVP too agreed. The Rajapaksa’s and Ranil’s UNP were very scared. Rajapaksa decided to make Prime Minister Ranil as acting President and President. The alliance also got into the game. Sajith agreed to make Dullas as presidential candidate. But the Rajapaksas defeated Dullas. Then the National Assembly of Freedom sat in opposition.
From there, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya and the Freedom National Council started negotiations to come together and compete in the next election. Ranil and the Rajapaksa family did everything they could to disrupt these negotiations. For this, they used the mainstream media of Sri Lanka.
Controversies in the Freedom Council about alliance with SJB…’
‘Dallas is not for alliance with SJB…’
‘We will not ally with SJB. A senior member of the Freedom council says.’
‘Seniors of Samagi Jana Balavegaya oppose to the alliance..’
‘Dallas asks for deputy leadership…’
‘Only four will align with SJB…’
This is the news that Ranil and Rapajakshala’s media planted in the past.
Ranil has 60 pohottuwa MPs…
Nimal Lanza meets the MPs who support Ranil…’
‘Anura Yapa to coordinate the group of MPs supporting Ranil…’
‘Ranil makes a new alliance with breakaways from Pohottuwa…’
‘The first meeting of Ranil’s alliance is coming soon…’
This is how Ranil and Rajapaksa’s joint media raised the alliance that Ranil is going to create by making news plants to crush the alliance between the Samagi Jana Balawega and the Freedom National Assembly.
Not a single Pohottu MP who claimed to join Ranil come out and said that we are making alliances with Ranil. Kanchana Wijesekera, who said that Ranil should be the presidential candidate, is now keeping his mouth shut. Prasanna Ranatunga, who told the party members to go with Ranil and accepted the challenge, is now playing a different ballad. At least Nimal Lanza, who claims to maintain Ranil’s 60 MPs, has not said that I will join an alliance with Ranil as president.
While the main media of this country have been playing this ballad for a year, the Samagi Jana Balawega and the Freedom National Council have reached an agreement after discussion. Now a group of MPs are ready to ally with Samagi Jana Balawegaya.
Now Ranil and Rajapakse’s media have started to attack the emerging alliance between the Samagi Jana Balavegaya and the Nidahas Sabha, just like ‘Garadiya’ sprinkled with kerosene.
‘When alliances are made, it will be difficult for Samagi Jana Balavega MPs to come to Parliament…’
It is one of the pebbles that the MPs of Samagi Jana Balavega are aimed and attempting to disrupt this alliance.
If the members of the party want only to be elected to the parliament in the next general election that party will always be in the opposition. A party has to play a game to form the next government. Colvin R. de Silva, a left-wing leader, once said that he would join even with the devil’s mother to form the next government. If Samagi Jana Balavega wants to form a government, should join with other parties. 2001 S.B.and GL formed coalitions no one said that they would lose their MP positions. The U.N.P organizer to Hagurankehta also said that he would like to forget SB’s old grudges to form a government.
In 2015, when Maithri came to form a government with U.N.P, the U.N.P.MPs were not afraid. They greeted Maithri’s group by garlanding them.
‘However, the people who protected the Rajapaksa are also in the Parliament of with Freedom Council. People who backed Rajapaksas by raising their hand to18, 19, 20 amendments. If those people are won back, the Samagi Jana Balavega will crash…’
This is another stone. 2001 S.B. who joined U.N.P. is the mastermind of North-West election fraud, S.B. who ran the fraudulent and corrupt voting machine in the 1999 presidential election. It was S.B. who sent the dead human heads to Ravi’s house. UNP brought a confidence motion against S. B.saying that Susanthika was sexually harassed by S.B. No one said that SB’s faults they had to bear in the UNP.
Mangala joined the U.N.P. in 2008, justifying the rigging of the elections that suppressed the media from 1994 to 2005. When Mangala came, no one said that the U.N.P will have to pay for Mangala’s fault.
The group that came out of Mahinda’s government with Maitri in 2015 are the ones who raised their hands for the 18th constitutional amendment and the impeachment of Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranaike. No one said that the liberal nature of the U.N.P. is over if these people are taken, or that they brought the Rajapaksa’s to power and sold to the Rajapaksa’s. Everyone said they needed to win the presidential election.
Stones thrown at the tree that bears fruits. This alliance is the alliance that was created to give birth to the mother of aragalaya. Now is the time to form the alliance.
‘Sinhaya Bayai Mallye’s’ song is a popular song. The time has come to say, brother, that we are not afraid of the lion, but of the alliance. And the time has come to give birth to the child of the ‘aragalaya’.
