Professor Barana Jayawardena, President of the Union of University Teachers, told ‘Mawrata’ that the unsolved tax issues and salary issues of university teachers are limited to around 15 round table discussions and the condition of university education is declining. (Sri Lanka Latest News)
He also mentioned that arrangements have been made to hold a working committee meeting of his federation in Colombo on the 28th to enter into strict trade union action related to the unresolved issues of the university lecturers.
He mentioned that the university lecturers are very disappointed due to the lack of sufficient allocations for the universities and the lack of chemicals required for educational trips and research.
Mr. Barana Jayawardena pointed out that if the situation continues for another 05 years, the universities will lose their foreign recognition.
The professor mentioned that about 2,500 lecturers have left the country since 2020, and the idea of leaving the country has not gone away even among the current lecturers.
Senior Professor Chandana Udawatta, Acting Chairman of the University Grants Commission was asked about this and he said that these issues will be resolved when the country’s economy improves. He also mentioned that his position is also affected by the country’s economic problems.
