In the year 2023, the number of children born in this country has decreased significantly, while the number of children who have died is showing a gradual increase and the number of marriages is showing a gradual decrease, Mr Wasantha Athukorala, senior professor of the Department of Economics and Statistical Studies of the University of Peradeniya, told ‘Mawrata’. (Sri Lanka Latest News)

In 2011, the number of births was 3,19,010, and by 2023 it had gone down to 2,47,900.

Accordingly, the number of births decreased by 71,110 or 22% in the five years.

Compared to 2022, the number of births decreased by 27,421 or 9% in 2023.

During the five years in question, the number of deaths has increased by 24%.

Also, when compared to 2019, the number of marriages in 2023 has decreased by 12,022 or 7%.

Compared to 2022, there were 19,784 fewer marriages in 2023, an 11% decrease in that year.

The professor points out that the current economic crisis, as well as the change in the order of the population transition, has the potential to affect such situations.

This survey has been conducted based on the data of the Registrar General’s Department.
