Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe has approached former Sri Lanka cricket captain Arjuna Ranatunga about becoming Chairman of the National Sports Council.

Arjuna Ranatunga, the 1996 World Cup captain, confirmed to the media that the minister asked him to head the National Sports Council.

Ranatunga stated that he will make a final decision after meeting with government officials later today.

Meanwhile, the Sports Ministry has announced that the National Sports Council will be formed tomorrow.

Former Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardena was the council’s previous Chairman, but he and his committee resigned shortly after Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa resigned.
