Following the expiration of the existing 10% tariff imposed by the United States, the Trump administration has decided to introduce new import duties ranging from 10% to 12.5% on goods from 60 trading partner countries, including Sri Lanka.
Accordingly, a new 10% tariff has been imposed on goods imported from Sri Lanka.
Reports indicate that the main reason behind the introduction of these additional tariffs is the failure of the respective countries to properly enforce laws prohibiting the importation of goods produced using forced labour, along with what the US administration considers to be weak policies in addressing the issue.
