The Trump administration has decided to impose new import tariffs on 60 trading partner countries, including Sri Lanka, following the expiry of the existing 10% tariff imposed by the United States.
Accordingly, a 10% import tariff has been imposed on goods imported from Sri Lanka.
Reports indicate that the primary reason for introducing these new tariffs is the failure of the affected countries to effectively enforce laws prohibiting the import of goods produced through forced labour, as well as their relatively lenient policies on the issue.
