According to Janaka Ratnayake, chairman of the Public Utilities Commission, it is planned to give the hydro power plants in Sri Lanka to private companies through the proposed new Electricity Reform Act.

It is hoped that a new electricity bill will be presented with that the ownership of hydropower plants will be transferred to companies. Norochchole Coal Plant.. We cannot assess the situation arising from transferring it to a company under the Companies Ordinance. In this new Act, it is stated that in the future, the companies controlling the Mahaveliya, Lakshapana and Maussakale hydropower plants should release water according to their wish. That means that in the future, it is more important that water needed for these water plants controlled by the private sector to electricity than agriculture.”
“A new commission is going to be brought in place of the Public Utilities Commission. Since I cannot be removed, the Public Utilities Commission Act will be removed and another bill will be brought.”
