According to Janaka Ratnayake, chairman of the Public Utilities Commission, it is planned to give the hydro power plants in Sri Lanka to private companies through the proposed new Electricity Reform Act.

He disclosed the facts in a press conference today (02).

Mr. Janaka Rathnayake, Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission, said further .

We found the plan “New Proposed Electricity Reform Act 2023”. This is a very confidential document.. It is hoped that a new electricity bill will be presented with that the ownership of hydropower plants will be transferred to companies. Norochchole Coal Plant.. We cannot assess the situation arising from transferring it to a company under the Companies Ordinance. In this new Act, it is stated that in the future, the companies controlling the Mahaveliya, Lakshapana and Maussakale hydropower plants should release water according to their wish. That means that in the future, it is more important that water needed for these water plants controlled by the private sector to electricity than agriculture.”

“A new commission is going to be brought in place of the Public Utilities Commission. Since I cannot be removed, the Public Utilities Commission Act will be removed and another bill will be brought.”

“There were 5 charges against me. I answered all those charges. Now it needs to be submitted to the parliament, last week it was not put. I am waiting for 113 to vote for it. I will not go leave this. Now they are trying to remove the commission and bring another commission. Politicians do stupid things.”
