The main organizer of the opposition, Mr. Lakshman Kiriella said that although the local government elections should be held next March, the government led by the president is using tricks to postpone the elections.
Mr. Kiriella also mentioned that if there is an election, since the government and the United National Party have no guarantees, they will use various subterfuges to stall.
Addressing the Ududumbara Constituency Assembly, the chief organizer of the Opposition Mr. Lakshman Kiriella further said:
“The regional council elections should be held by March next year, but now the president wants to postpone it.” If the election is held, there will be no guarantees for the government and the United National Party. Now they are trying to postpone the election, saying that the election system is not good. This election system was brought in by the current president. When he was prime minister, he increased the number of regional councils and municipal council elections, the number of members, and the appointment of women. Now they say that the system is not good. It is not the system that is looking for a subterfuge to delay the elections. They are trying to postpone the election by saying that they are making a new system. We would like to tell him that if he tries to postpone the election, we will go to the court, and we are very sure that we will get a fair decision from the court.
