Tamil War Memorial Unveiled in Canada Despite Sri Lankan Government’s Objections

A contentious monument, described by its organizers as a tribute to Tamil civilians killed during the final stages of Sri Lanka’s civil war, was officially unveiled on Saturday at Chinguacousy Park in Brampton, Canada—despite persistent objections from the Sri Lankan government.

The 4.8-meter stainless steel structure, which was approved earlier this year by the Brampton City Council, has sparked strong criticism from Colombo.

Canada’s Minister of Justice, Gary Anandasangaree, publicly defended the memorial on social media, stating that it honors “the thousands of innocent lives lost” and celebrates “the resilience of global Tamil communities.”

In response, Sri Lanka’s Foreign Ministry has reportedly requested urgent details about the inauguration from its High Commission in Ottawa.

This latest diplomatic strain recalls a similar incident in August 2024, when then-Foreign Minister Ali Sabry summoned Canada’s envoy to protest the laying of the monument’s foundation stone, denouncing it as promoting a “false narrative.”
