Delayed Forensic Reports Blamed for Severe Prison Congestion in Sri Lanka
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The government has identified delays in issuing forensic reports as the main reason behind the severe congestion in prisons across the country.

According to reports, around 5,000 forensic reports are currently pending. Among them, a significant number are related to detainees arrested on charges connected with drug possession.

The government has paid close attention to this issue and has taken steps to expedite the release of the pending reports. As part of these measures, the Government Analyst’s Department has been instructed to remain open until 10.00 p.m., while overtime payments and transportation facilities have been provided to employees to ensure that forensic reports are prepared and issued without further delays.

Accordingly, the Government Analyst’s Department has stated that it expects to issue around 9,000 forensic reports before the end of this month.
