The Supreme Court has ordered the Election Commission to take immediate steps to hold elections for the Samanthurai Municipal Council and the Kalmunai Pradeshiya Sabha.
The court also directed the Minister of Local Government to immediately commence delimitation work for the Samanthurai Municipal Council.
In addition, the Supreme Court ordered the President to publish gazette notifications relating to the delimitation of the Kalmunai Pradeshiya Sabha and the Samanthurai Urban Council after the completion of the delimitation process.
The order was issued while delivering the verdict on a fundamental rights petition filed by two voters residing in the Samanthurai area.
The petition was heard before a Supreme Court bench comprising Justices Janak de Silva, Priyantha Fernando, and Sampath Abhayakoon.
