The Deputy Mayor of the Kurunegala Municipal Council, which is currently under the control of the National People’s Power, has been arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption in the Battaramulla area.
According to officials, the suspect was arrested while attempting to accept a bribe of Rs. 3 million.
It is alleged that the Deputy Mayor demanded the bribe in exchange for awarding the tender related to cleaning services at the Kurunegala bus stand and public toilets.
Authorities stated that Rs. 3 million upfront and Rs. 5 million per month had been demanded in connection with the tender. The Deputy Mayor was arrested while allegedly attempting to collect the Rs. 3 million payment.
Officials from the Bribery Commission said the suspect is scheduled to be produced before the Aluthkade Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (09).
He was elected to the Kurunegala Municipal Council representing the All Ceylon People’s Congress and later became Deputy Mayor after supporting the National People’s Power in forming the administration.
