The Sectoral Oversight Committee on Infrastructure and Strategic Development recently reviewed the Sri Lanka Electricity (Amendment) Bill and approved it to be presented to Parliament for its second reading on the 24th.
The Committee convened in Parliament on the 17th, chaired by Member of Parliament S. M. Marikkar. Representatives from key institutions, including the Ministry of Energy, the Attorney General’s Department, and the Sri Lanka Electricity Board, attended the meeting.
During the session, the Committee examined several proposals and recommendations submitted by the Public Utilities Commission related to the amendment of the Bill, reaching consensus on multiple points. The Attorney General’s Department also shared its perspectives on the Bill before its submission for Committee approval, incorporating previously agreed amendments.
Significant topics discussed at length included land ownership and consumer rights under the new Bill. The Committee further recommended that the Ministry of Power and the Public Utilities Commission collaborate within one month after the Bill’s passage to develop regulations concerning consumer rights.
The meeting was also attended by Hon. Members of Parliament Nalin Bandara Jayamaha, Ajith P. Perera, Asitha Niroshana Egoda Withana, Manjula Suraweera Arachchi, and Shantha Padma Kumara Subasinghe. With the approval of Committee Chairman S. M. Marikkar, the Chairman of the Finance Committee, MP Dr. Harsha de Silva, also participated in the proceedings.
