The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB)-led general opposition has secured a clear majority in the Kotapola Various Services Cooperative Society local elections.
According to the results announced so far, the SJB-led opposition has secured 65 out of the total 100 representative positions.
In comparison, the National People’s Power (NPP) has obtained only 25 positions.
Notably, the Chairman of the Kotapola Pradeshiya Sabha and six of its members—along with the Vice Chairman of the Pitabeddara Pradeshiya Sabha—contested the election representing the National People’s Power. However, all of them were defeated.
As a result, the SJB-led general opposition will now hold the authority to appoint the seven members to the Board of Directors of the Kotapola Various Services Cooperative Society.
