The opposition leader Mr. Sajith Premadasa revealed in the Parliament yesterday (6) that although 10 billion rupees have been allocated for the election in the budget, the current government is trying to control the local government institutions by appointing political henchmen through a circular, saying that there is no money.
The opposition leader said that through this circular, the Chairman of the Area Coordinating Committees has been empowered to appoint a coordinator to coordinate the work of the local government bodies and that the current government is working to control the local government bodies through political minions without creating new councils.
Also, the president addressed the judiciary and said that the people do not want an election and that no one has a 50 percent majority in the parliament. Here, the opposition leader challenged the Prime Minister and said that he and his group are ready to give 5/6 if not 2/3 to get the election if they are going to hold an early election.
Moreover, the opposition leader said that the president has invited high court judges to banquets and when such sensitive court decisions are to be given, it is unethical to hold such banquets and it is an obstacle to independence.
Mr. Sajith Premadasa, the leader of the opposition, further said that if it is not possible to hold the local government election, then a presidential election should be held and the necessary support will be provided to draft the necessary laws for that purpose.
