The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Washington, D.C., commemorated the 78th Anniversary of Sri Lanka’s Independence on February 4, 2026, at the Sri Lanka Residence, bringing together U.S. officials, members of the Sri Lankan community, and friends of Sri Lanka under the national theme “Rebuilding Sri Lanka.”

Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Samarasinghe underscored the vital role of the Sri Lankan diaspora in the United States in the country’s rebuilding efforts. He emphasized that rebuilding Sri Lanka goes beyond restoring infrastructure and livelihoods damaged by the recent cyclone.

“Rebuilding Sri Lanka,” the Ambassador noted, encompasses strengthening democratic values, upholding the rule of law, ensuring good governance, and safeguarding transparency, accountability, and the independence of key institutions. He concluded by urging all Sri Lankans to remain committed to protecting and nurturing the island’s diversity, which he described as the nation’s greatest strength.

Ambassador Samarasinghe also expressed deep appreciation for the support extended by the United States during times of crisis, recalling the assistance provided following the 2004 Tsunami and the recent Cyclone Ditwah. He described the United States as a true and sincere friend of Sri Lanka.
