A tip-off received from an overseas intelligence source has prompted a major security investigation in Sri Lanka after three rocket launchers, believed to be remnants from the wartime period, were discovered buried and concealed in the Kudumbimalai area of Walachchenai.
Following the recovery of the weapons over the weekend under highly suspicious circumstances, the Inspector General of Police has directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to take over the investigation.
Security officials said the discovery stemmed from a foreign intelligence alert indicating the possible presence of hidden military-grade weapons in the Eastern Province.
Police revealed that the rocket launchers were initially unearthed by an unidentified individual who had dug them out from a pit and later concealed them again in a nearby location.
Authorities confirmed that the recovered weapons were Swedish-manufactured 84mm RCL M2 rocket launchers.
Preliminary assessments indicate that the launchers had been buried at the LTTE’s former Sundar Base camp.
The CID has launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident under the direct orders of the Inspector General of Police.
