Police have confirmed that they are carrying out an impartial investigation into the alleged altercation between Kaduwela Mayor Ranjan Jayalal and a group of representatives from an animal welfare organization, according to Sri Lanka latest news.
A senior police officer handling the investigation stated that CCTV footage will be reviewed as part of the inquiry.
Meanwhile, representatives of the animal welfare organization have announced their intention to file a fundamental rights petition before the Supreme Court regarding the incident.
The group claimed that Mayor Ranjan Jayalal threatened them during a discussion convened by the Kaduwela Municipal Council. They had been summoned to the Council the day before yesterday to discuss issues related to street dogs in the Malabe area.
A lawyer representing the Sri Lanka Animal Welfare Organization, who participated in the discussion, has lodged complaints with both the Kaduwela Police and the Bar Association.
When questioned about the allegations, Mayor Ranjan Jayalal stated that he had merely asked the lawyer to leave his office politely.
However, an audio recording of the alleged threat is currently circulating on social media.
