The Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) has received Cabinet approval to purchase 600 new air-conditioned Deluxe buses for intercity and long-distance passenger transport services.
Under the 2026 Government Investment Programme, the SLTB had allocated Rs. 14,400 million to purchase 600 new Standard buses with a seating capacity of 49 to 54 passengers.
However, following the introduction of new safety standards for passenger transport buses under the 2025–2026 Road Safety Plan, it was decided that Deluxe air-conditioned buses should be deployed for intercity and long-distance services.
Accordingly, the Cabinet has approved the purchase of 600 more comfortable air-conditioned Deluxe buses instead of the previously planned Standard buses, using the existing allocated funds.
