The General Secretary of the Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC) and Nuwara Eliya District Member of Parliament, Mr. Jeevan Thondaman, has decided to resign from his position as General Secretary of the party. He has informed several Vice Presidents of the party via telephone to convene the party’s National Council for this purpose.
Following the defeat of the 2026 budget proposal of the Agarapatana Pradeshiya Sabha, where the Chairman’s position is held by the Ceylon Workers’ Congress, a telephone conversation took place between the current Chairman of the CWC, Mr. Senthil Thondaman, and the party’s General Secretary, Mr. Jeevan Thondaman. After this discussion, Mr. Jeevan Thondaman decided to step down from the post of General Secretary of the Ceylon Workers’ Congress, according to a senior Vice President of the party.
The senior Vice President further stated that Mr. Jeevan Thondaman has requested that letters be issued to CWC Vice Presidents and to CWC municipal councillors of the Talawakele–Lindula Urban Council, Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council, Haguranketha, Walapane, and Kotmale local government institutions, instructing them to withdraw their support for the government.
Although the General Secretary of the Ceylon Workers’ Congress has informed party officials via telephone to convene the National Council, a senior Vice President of the party stated that the National Council will only be convened if the request is submitted in writing.
