In the current context of a shortage of both rupees and dollars in the country, it is crucial for everyone to act without politicization. However, the governor of the Southern Province is reportedly making illegal political appointments, with governors’ letters being used to place allies in local government bodies without elections, according to the opposition leader.
Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa made these comments on June 29 during the donation of classroom equipment worth 1,177,000 rupees to St. Sebastian Maha Vidyalaya in Gampaha, Mahara, Wattala, Hunupitiya, and Ederamulla. He also noted that the funds for purchasing clothes for the school’s dance team came from the school’s development account.
Premadasa issued a stern warning to governors, advising them against such actions and stressing that they have no right to execute wasteful projects in a financially troubled country. He urged them to cease the improper appointment of their supporters to local government positions and to prioritize using limited resources for schools and children. He also indicated that those involved in these illegal activities might be required to account for their actions in court if a coalition government takes charge.
Furthermore, Premadasa highlighted the achievements of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya’s various programs, including the donation of 183.2 million rupees worth of medicines and hospital equipment to 60 hospitals, 88 buses valued at 5 million rupees to 87 schools, and comfortable classroom equipment worth 29.8 million rupees to 273 schools, benefitting a total of 357 schools.
