The Court of Appeal has today (04) ordered that the appeal submitted by Minister Prasanna Ranatunga to be acquitted of his suspended prison sentence be heard before a panel of five judges. (Sri Lanka Latest News)
These appeals were heard today before a bench of Judge Nishanka Bandula Karunaratne and Shashi Mahendran.
This order was announced after considering the request made by President’s Attorney Rienzi Arsakularatne, who represented the aggrieved party in the relevant litigation.
Accordingly, the relevant appellants Menaka Wijesundara, Sampath Abeykoon, P. Kumaran Ratnam is scheduled to be heard on September 12 before the five-member Court of Appeal bench of Sampath Wijeratne and Mayadunne Koraya.
The Colombo High Court sentenced Minister Prasanna Ranatunga to two years imprisonment with hard labour when he was the Chief Minister of the Western Province and was found guilty of threatening a businessman with Rs. It was decided to stand down for five years.
In addition, the court imposed a fine of 25 million rupees.
Minister Prasanna Ranatunga has submitted this petition before the Court of Appeal, requesting that the Colombo High Court set the punishment against him against the law and therefore issue an order to acquit him of those charges.
