Thousands of young people forced their way into the parliament building in the capital Kathmandu on Monday [September 8], demanding the government lift a ban on 26 social media platforms including Facebook and YouTube and crackdown on corruption.
Communications and Information Minister Prithvi Subha Gurung reportedly said the decision to lift the ban was taken after an emergency cabinet meeting on Monday evening “to address Gen Z demands”.
More than 100 people were injured in protests in cities outside the capital.
Social media platforms like Instagram have millions of users in Nepal, and they rely on them for entertainment, news and business.
