The Supreme Court says that the orders given by the court to prevent the people who are arrested by the police from being brutally tortured have not achieved any results. Sri Lanka Latest News
The Supreme Court points out that the relevant orders have not been considered by the National Police Commission or the Inspector General of Police.
When a fundamental rights petition filed in connection with a case of brutal torture was called for a hearing, the three-member Supreme Court bench chairperson Justice S. Mr. Turai Raja has mentioned this while making a statement in the open court.
The judge said that the court had issued various orders, warnings and guidelines to prevent people arrested by the police from being tortured.
But Judge Turai Raja has pointed out that the National Police Commission or the Inspector General of Police have not considered it and no report has been submitted.
“Ada Derana” court reporter stated that the judge made these comments when two student activists of the university filed a fundamental rights petition alleging that they were beaten and treated in a humiliating manner by the police during a protest organized by Kelaniya University students in 2009.
