International Monetary Fund’s Asia Pacific Department Director Krishna Sri Niwasan, International Monetary Fund’s Senior Mission Head for Sri Lanka Mr. Peter Brewer and a delegation met today (15) at the opposition leader’s office in Colombo, including opposition leader Sajith Premadasa.
They have come to Sri Lanka for a step in the regular consultation process conducted before the first evaluation of the International Monetary Fund’s Comprehensive Credit Facility to be carried out this year.
The Leader of the Opposition explained at length about the growing economic situation of the country and asked the relevant delegation to support Sri Lanka in this difficult time. The Leader of the Opposition said that the people of the country are living under unbearable pressure and hardship, especially due to the increase in income tax. The opposition leader said that the majority of the people of the country are suffering from poverty and said that the small and medium scale industries of the country are also in serious danger. The leader of the opposition asked the delegation to give necessary advice and influence to the government in order to eliminate theft and misuse and use the money received by the country in a transparent manner.
The heads of the Economic Committee of the United People’s Power, Dr. Harsha De Silva, Kabir Hashim, Iran Wickramaratne, as well as a group of public representatives including Professor G.L. Peiris, Nalaka Godaheva, Niroshan Perera, Harshana Rajakaruna were also present.
