The son-in-law of former Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena has reportedly informed police during interrogation that two unidentified individuals brought and abandoned an illegally imported BMW and a jeep, valued at over Rs. 50 million, at his residence.

According to his statement, the vehicles were left at his house approximately one week ago.

On October 20, Kandy Police discovered the unregistered BMW and jeep concealed in the Aniwatta area of Kandy. The vehicles, which were illegally imported into the country, were found during an investigation led by a special police team under the direction of Senior Superintendent of Police Anuruddha Bandaranaike.

The former minister’s son-in-law, identified as a businessman involved in vehicle sales in Kandy, has provided this information to investigators.

Police report that the vehicles have not been assembled and were brought into the country without the payment of customs duties, misleading the customs authorities. Additionally, investigations have confirmed that the vehicles lack proper registration and do not have a listed owner.

Kandy Police have seized the two vehicles and have recorded statements from the son-in-law of Rohitha Abeygunawardena. Further investigations are ongoing.
