Colombo District MP of the National People’s Power (NPP), Aruna Panagoda, announced in Parliament today (12) that a decision has been made to relocate the deer population spread across several Grama Seva Divisions in the Homagama area to a more suitable location.
MP Panagoda highlighted that the deer population in the region is estimated to be between 1,500 and 2,500, causing significant damage to farmland and agricultural resources.
Speaking further, he stated:
“There is a massive deer population across five or six Grama Seva Divisions within the Homagama electorate. We have been working for years to address this issue, and now the Department of Wildlife Conservation has taken steps to remove these animals from the area.”
He further explained that a survey has been initiated in collaboration with the Wildlife Department to obtain an accurate estimate of the deer population.
“According to the information gathered so far, between 1,500 and 2,500 deer are destroying farmers’ property in these areas. Therefore, we have decided to capture them safely and relocate them to a more suitable environment,” he added.
