Government Plans Island Detention for High-Profile Drug Traffickers Amid Prison Corruption Allegations
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

It is learnt that the government has now turned its attention to detaining the most serious underworld criminals and major drug traffickers arrested during the recent nationwide operations against drug trafficking on an uninhabited island.

Although these high-profile criminals and traffickers are currently held in several prisons, including Boossa and Angunakolapelessa, allegations have surfaced that they continue their drug operations from within prison walls. Reports suggest that some prison officials may be assisting them in these activities.

It has also been reported that these criminals are freely using mobile phones while in detention. Despite attempts to block phone communications using signal jammers on several occasions, these measures have reportedly been ineffective due to the actions of certain corrupt officials.

In response, the government is said to have made a highly confidential decision to relocate these underworld figures and drug traffickers to an island, with a suitable location already identified for this purpose.

While the existing remand prison facilities can accommodate around 12,000 inmates, more than 35,000 suspects charged with drug-related offenses are currently being held in them.

Accordingly, attention is also being given to establishing new rehabilitation camps across the country for these drug suspects. A special committee has reportedly already been appointed to oversee this initiative.
