Farmers and Traders Shut Down Nuwara Eliya Economic Center in Protest Over Imports
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Businessmen and vegetable farmers in the Nuwara Eliya area staged a protest today (10) by closing the Nuwara Eliya Economic Center for the entire day. Sri Lanka Latest News

According to the protesting businessmen and vegetable farmers, the government has imported onions and potatoes despite having sufficient stocks of locally produced potatoes and onions available to meet domestic market demand. They stated that due to inadequate tax policies, local potato and onion farmers are struggling to sell their produce at prices that cover production costs.

The traders added that no vegetable stocks from the Nuwara Eliya Economic Center were transported to any other part of the island, including Colombo, and that vegetable farmers in the region suspended their daily operations in support of the protest.

In response to the situation, a heavy police presence was deployed at the Nuwara Eliya Economic Center.
