Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya says that age-appropriate sex education must be introduced to children in order to prevent sexual abuse and undue pressure. Sri Lanka Latest News

Speaking at a program held in Kandy, the Prime Minister stated that plans for this initiative will be formulated and implemented after obtaining recommendations and expert advice.

A program aimed at educating public representatives in the Kandy district on upcoming education reforms was held under the patronage of Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya.

Addressing the event, the Prime Minister said:

“We have prepared a book for Grade 6 that is appropriate for that age. The Ministry of Health, especially the Family Health Units, has repeatedly emphasized the need to provide sex education. The number of children facing sexual abuse and pressure is increasing in our country. To protect themselves from such incidents, the Family Health Units and the Ministry of Health have consistently informed us that children must be educated on this matter.

Similarly, the Child Protection Authority has also informed us that this is a serious issue. Children must be educated on protecting their bodies. We are currently holding discussions with the relevant ministries and authorities. Their recommendations are being considered. No final decision has been made yet regarding how, when, or at what age this information will be introduced.

Based on these discussions, we believe that as children’s bodies develop, they should receive proper education on self-protection in a manner appropriate for their age. We will do this with the guidance and advice of experts in the health sector.”
