The SJP has decided to propose Rasika Priyankara as the new chairman to replace the late Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha chairman, Lasantha Wickramasekera, who was tragically murdered.
The election for the new chairman is scheduled to be held on the 21st.
A social media post regarding this decision describes Rasika Priyankara as a reflection of Lasantha Wickramasekera, noting that the two entered politics together, won their respective constituencies with the support of the people, and shared the blessings of their community.
According to the post, Priyankara’s decision to step forward comes from the loss and shock of his non-political colleague’s death. It is framed as a gesture of friendship and a commitment to realizing the vision of Lasantha Wickramasekera—a humanist whose life was cut short by tragedy.
The post emphasizes that, for the people of Weligama, the character of a person matters more than politics. It highlights that honoring Wickramasekera’s legacy is in line with Weligama’s longstanding tradition of valuing good leadership. By proposing Priyankara, the community aims to pay tribute to the original Weligama lion, Lasantha Wickramasekera, who dedicated his life to serving his hometown as chairman.
