The European Union has officially expressed its support for the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) report concerning Sri Lanka. The EU communicated its stance to the UNHRC during its 57th session, which commenced yesterday (09) in Geneva, Switzerland.
The report, prepared by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, was a central topic of discussion during the session. The EU confirmed its acceptance of the findings outlined in the report and emphasized its close monitoring of Sri Lanka’s reconciliation efforts.
In a related development, the United Kingdom also issued a statement, calling for an independent investigation into alleged human rights violations in Sri Lanka, based on the findings of the UNHRC report.
A coalition of countries, including Canada, Malawi, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and the United States, has also made a joint statement, expressing their concerns about Sri Lanka’s human rights record and calling for accountability.
