A serious complaint has been lodged alleging that a young woman who visited the Outpatient Department of the Negombo District General Hospital for medical treatment was sexually assaulted by a doctor on duty.

According to the complaint, the incident occurred while the young woman was receiving treatment, and the doctor is accused of committing the abuse during this time.

Commenting on the matter, Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe, Media Spokesperson for the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA), confirmed that the accused doctor has already been expelled from the association.

He emphasized the need for a fair and impartial investigation, calling for the immediate implementation of the law and strict action against those responsible.

“A report was requested from the Negombo Hospital regarding the incident. One significant point that emerged is that this particular doctor had previously violated the constitution of the Government Medical Officers’ Association,” Dr. Wijesinghe said.

He further revealed that the doctor had been removed from the GMOA in 2021 due to undisciplined behavior.

“This is not a matter we can take lightly. A thorough and unbiased investigation must be carried out. The Government Medical Officers’ Association will not, under any circumstances, protect wrongdoers. We are fully prepared to extend our maximum support to ensure justice is served,” he added.
