The Cabinet has granted approval to establish the “Rebuilding Sri Lanka” Fund, which aims to support the country’s recovery following the massive destruction caused by Cyclone ‘Ditva’, one of the worst natural disasters in Sri Lanka’s recent history.

This fund is to be set up as a statutory fund under the Office of the President, and its management committee will consist of representatives from both the government and the private sector.

The committee will be chaired by Dr. Anil Jayanta Pranananda, Minister of Labour and Deputy Minister of Finance and Planning, while G.M.R.D. Aponsu, Senior Additional Secretary to the President, will serve as the convener.

The other members of the committee are:

  1. Hanif Yoosuf – Presidential Special Envoy for Foreign Investments / Governor of the Western Province
  2. Dr. Harshana Suriyaaratchi (or Suriya-p-peruma) – Secretary, Ministry of Finance
  3. Duminda Hulugalla (Hulangamuwa) – Senior Economic Advisor to the President
  4. Sugishwara Gunawardena – Director General, Ministry of Foreign Affairs
  5. Mohan Pandithage – Chairman, Hayleys Group
  6. Krishan Balendra – Chairman, John Keells Holdings
  7. Dr. Parakrama Dissanayake – Deputy Chairman and Managing Director, Aitken Spence
  8. Ashroff Omar – Group CEO, Brandix
  9. Ishara Nanayakkara – Executive Chairman, LOLC

The management committee will have full authority over the effective administration of the fund, including needs assessment, priority setting, allocation of funds, and disbursement for approved recovery activities.

The committee will also ensure full transparency, proper financial management, and auditing of all fund-related operations.
