Germany Warns Sri Lanka: End Corruption and Policy Instability to Attract European Investment

Berlin is ready to send German dollars to Sri Lanka — but there can be no ‘games’. A set of conditions for the government at the Colombo German Business Forum!

Amid the Indo-Pacific geopolitical contest among global powers, Germany, Europe’s leading power, has turned its close attention toward Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lankan-German Business Forum 2026, held in Colombo under the theme “Building Reliable Partnerships,” is a clear example of this.

However, beyond diplomatic smiles and important discussions, the German representatives have delivered a very clear and firm message to the new government: if Sri Lanka wants German investment, it must immediately put an end to the country’s traditional bureaucracy, corruption, and policy instability.

Strategic location and the dollar opportunity

Speaking at the event, Germany’s Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Dr. Felix Neumann, pointed out that amid global economic uncertainty, German companies are currently looking for reliable international partners.

Because Sri Lanka is located in the middle of major shipping routes in the Indian Ocean, it has a unique strategic advantage in connecting trade between the East and the West.

The ambassador said that at a time when multinational companies are trying to diversify their supply chains rather than limiting them to a single country, Sri Lanka could benefit greatly from this. In particular, there is strong potential for German investment in sectors such as maritime services, logistics, renewable energy, and infrastructure development.

The ‘work’ Berlin expects

But Martin Claus, Chief Delegate of the German Chamber of Commerce — AHK Sri Lanka — also emphasized that all these opportunities can be secured only through reforms carried out within Sri Lanka.

Since 1959, Germany has supported Sri Lanka’s vocational training sector — including German Tech — in order to produce skilled workers. However, if investors face delays in registering businesses and policy changes whenever governments change, they will avoid Sri Lanka.

The time has now come for the Malimawa government to prove through action to international investors that the ‘good governance’ and ‘transparency’ it speaks about on political platforms are not merely political slogans.”
