Police Media Spokesperson ASP F. U. Wutler has warned that strict legal action will be taken against individuals who post false or misleading news during this period of national disaster.
Speaking at a media briefing held today (01) at the Tri-Forces Security Headquarters, ASP Wutler noted that the Criminal Investigation Department has received multiple complaints regarding the circulation of news that causes fear and anxiety among the public. Investigations into these complaints have been launched by the Computer Investigation Unit.
He emphasized that, at a time when the government is actively ensuring the provision of essential services and supplies for the safety and well-being of citizens during the post-disaster period, some individuals have been posting unverified and misleading information on social media.
“Issuing and publishing statements that create fear and confusion among the public is a serious offense,” ASP Wutler said, adding that the dissemination of false information is punishable under the law. He urged the public to refrain from spreading unethical and untrue news during this critical time when the country is united in its response to the disaster.
ASP Wutler also reported incidents of crime from disaster-affected areas, including detention centers, and stressed that strict action will be taken against anyone committing rape, unlawful entry, theft, or robbery, in accordance with the Sri Lanka Penal Code. He called for the public’s respectful cooperation with the government’s joint operations for the welfare of those affected by the disaster.
In addition, the Police Department has implemented several urgent measures to ensure the safety of foreign visitors. Tourists facing any issues can contact the Director of the Tourist Police Division at 0718591894, 0112421070, or the 1912 hotline, as well as the Airport (Tourism) OIC at 0718596057 and the Airport OIC at 0718591640.
