Sajith Premadasa Gifts Rare Wilpattu Leopard Photo to Indian PM Modi During Colombo Visit

A remarkable photograph presented by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their meeting in Colombo on April 5, 2025, has become the subject of much public attention.

The photograph, personally captured by Premadasa, features a rare female leopard from Wilpattu National Park, known as “Eye-One.” The Opposition Leader shared the significance of this unique image in an official statement:

“It is a great honour to present this special photo of a female tiger, known as Eye-One, from Wilpattu National Park, to His Excellency Shri Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, in Colombo today, 5th April 2025.”

He further explained the symbolism behind the image:

“Despite losing the sight in one eye, this unique animal, which successfully survives in the forest and overcomes the challenges of the wild, is a true symbol of Sri Lanka’s natural heritage and beauty.”

Premadasa highlighted that the leopard’s striking blue eyes tell a story of survival through adversity—possibly due to glaucoma, cataracts, or an injury. Her continued presence in the wilderness, despite these challenges, represents the enduring resilience of Sri Lanka’s wildlife.

“Her striking blue eyes tell a long story about her survival in the face of challenges — perhaps glaucoma, cataracts, or some accident — but her steadfastness in the forest is a symbol of the resilience of the wild.”

However, he noted with sadness that the leopard, once a symbol of the island’s rich biodiversity, has not been sighted in recent years, and her current status remains unknown.

“Unfortunately, however, this unique creature has not been seen for several years and it has not been possible to confirm whether she is still alive.”

The symbolic gesture has resonated with many, sparking conversations about wildlife conservation and the deep-rooted ties between India and Sri Lanka.
