The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has issued a formal statement expressing deep concern over the recent death of a suspect who had been hospitalized while in the custody of the Welikada Police. Sri Lanka Latest News
In its statement, the BASL urges the Acting Inspector General of Police to launch an immediate and impartial investigation into the incident.
The Bar Association further noted in its letter that it is closely monitoring developments related to the case. It affirmed that appropriate action will be taken in response to the incident and assured that all necessary measures will be pursued to uphold the rule of law.
The BASL also stressed the importance of law enforcement agencies, including the Sri Lanka Police, exercising the highest level of caution and responsibility to prevent such incidents, which it described as a serious breach of public trust in the justice system.
The Association expressed its regret over the recurring deaths in police custody and the continued failure of authorities to respond swiftly and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The letter additionally highlights that the government faces mounting accusations over its inability to prevent the recurrence of such incidents and to hold the responsible individuals accountable.
Accordingly, the Bar Association reaffirmed its support for all steps that can be taken to address custodial deaths. It also expressed its willingness to assist law enforcement authorities, including the Sri Lanka Police, in efforts to ensure accountability and justice.
