Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe announced that steps will be taken to impose a maximum retail price (MRP) on several essential items in the near future.
The Minister made this statement today (16) while addressing the media in Anuradhapura.
“Not only chicken but also water bottles are being sold at unreasonable prices. For example, a water bottle currently priced at Rs. 100 can actually be sold for less than Rs. 40. Similarly, a packet of salt that costs Rs. 52 is being sold for Rs. 100. This indicates a significant issue within the salt industry as well. From water bottles to basic necessities, consumers are facing an undue burden in the market,” the Minister explained.
He further noted that the Consumer Council, in collaboration with the Consumer Affairs Authority, is already taking necessary measures to regulate the prices of several items. “The finalized maximum retail prices will be announced in the near future,” he added.
