Colombo, Jan 30 – Former Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration, Priyantha Mayadunne, was arrested today by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

The arrest follows an investigation into allegations that Rs. 183 million from the Cooperative Fund was spent on the Isuru Saviya celebration held in Kurunegala in 2011 to mark International Cooperative Day.

Police Media Spokesperson, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Buddhika Manatunga, stated that the CID had submitted its investigation report to the Attorney General. Upon review, the Attorney General determined that sufficient evidence was available to proceed with charges against the suspect.

As a result, Priyantha Kumara Mayadunne, who was serving as the Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Cooperatives and Internal Trade at the time of the alleged misappropriation, was taken into custody by the CID today.

The suspect is expected to be produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court. Meanwhile, the CID continues further investigations into the incident.
