The National Freedom Front (NFF), led by Wimal Weerawansa, has announced a significant decision regarding the upcoming local government elections. The party, which did not contest the last general election, has decided to participate in the elections independently, without forming alliances with any other political parties.

In the previous presidential election, Wimal Weerawansa and several other parties extended their support to Dilith Jayaweera, who contested under the Universal Basic Law. However, following Jayaweera’s defeat, Weerawansa chose not to contest the subsequent general election. At the time, he publicly declared his decision not to form alliances with any party in the future.

As per the latest development, Weerawansa is preparing to field the National Freedom Front as an independent entity in the local government elections, aiming to secure at least 100 seats in local government institutions. This move is part of a broader strategy to establish a grassroots mechanism for the party and set the foundation for a long-term political journey.

Coinciding with this announcement, the NFF inaugurated its new headquarters and cultural and political center today (19) at Robert Gunawardena Mawatha, Battaramulla. The ceremonial opening was led by party leader Wimal Weerawansa and took place with the blessings of the Maha Sangha.

The event commenced with traditional religious rituals, including the chanting of Seth Pirith by the Maha Sangha. Among the prominent attendees were Sabaragamuwa University Chancellor Professor Kumburugamuwe Vajira Thera, General Secretary of the Patriotic Bhikkhu Front Venerable Bengamuwe Nalaka Thero, and Kelaniya University Cultural Division Head Professor Induragare Dhammarathana Thero, who delivered a brief sermon.

The ceremony was attended by a diverse gathering, including political party leaders, politicians, scholars, artists, and supporters of the National Freedom Front.

The newly established headquarters is set to serve as a hub for coordinating all political and cultural activities of the National Freedom Front, marking a new phase in the party’s journey.
