To all those who contributed to the 6.9 million mandate and are now feeling disappointed, we invite you to see this as the first step toward achieving the true objectives of that mandate. Tomorrow (18th) at 2:00 pm in Nugegoda, the first “People’s Power” political unity rally will take place. Mr. Wimal Weerawansa, executive member of the political union, leader of the National Freedom Front, and Member of Parliament, has invited everyone to join this grand rally.
Mr. Weerawansa made this announcement at a press conference regarding the first major general meeting of the “Sarvajana Balawegaya” political union, which will be held tomorrow.
Also present were:
Leader of the Mawbima Janatha Party and entrepreneur, Dilith Jayaweera, Leader of the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya and Member of Parliament, Udaya Gammanpila,Chairman of the National Organization ‘Duty’ and Member of Parliament, Gevindu Kumaratunga, Member of Parliament for the Independent Members Forum, Channa Jayasumana, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Sri Lanka, Dr G. Weerasinghe, Deputy Secretary of the Democratic Left Front, G. D. V. Tillakasiri
Mr. Wimal Weerawansa further commented:
“This press conference is to inform the general public through you, the journalists, about the first massive public rally following the establishment of the ‘Sarvajana Balawegaya’ political alliance. We need to explain why this unity is being established under the name of universal power and why we aim to empower people’s activism through it. The expectation of the 6.9 million mandate was to build a fair, disciplined, law-abiding, and prosperous society. This mandate included the highest number of youth votes in history, reflecting the innocent hopes of the youth.
As the hopes placed on Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s governance began to crumble, the contributors to that mandate started feeling desperate. We, who contributed to this mandate, have an unavoidable responsibility to come forward and realize the expectations of the great mass revolution that brought Gotabaya Rajapaksa to power.
We do not believe that the current program of Ranil Wickremesinghe and his supporters, or the silent approval of the opposition, can fulfil the expectations of the 6.9 million mandate. To fill this great political vacuum, we have united under the ‘Sarvajana Balawegaya’. Our first mass gathering will be held in Nugegoda tomorrow at 2 pm. We invite all those who supported that great mandate and are disappointed today to come to Nugegoda tomorrow at 2 pm to achieve the real goals expected from the 6.9 million mandate.”
