Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih won a landslide primary election within the Maldivian Democratic Party on Saturday (28th) over his challenger Former President Mohamed Nasheed, to clinch the ruling party’s nomination for the presidential election this September, Maldivian media reported Sunday.
Solih, 60, received over 60% of the votes counted by late Saturday night, the Maldivian website Avas reported. Solih became president in 2018 for a 5-year term.
Nasheed, 55, was the Maldives’ first elected president from 2008–12 and is currently the Speaker of Parliament. He survived a bomb attack in Male, 2021, with serious injuries.
Also, Nasheed is currently working as a special advisor to the President of Sri Lanka, Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe.
