Today, Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka and a senior lawyer filed a fundamental rights petition with the Supreme Court requesting an order suspending the implementation of the gazette notification issued by the President announcing high security zones in Colombo city.
Defense Secretary General Kamal Gunaratne (Retd.), Inspector General of Police Chandana Wickramaratne, Sri Lanka Bar Association President President Advocate Saliya Peiris and Attorney General as respondents MP Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka and lawyer Sudath Wickramaratne have filed this petition.
The petitioners say that the right to peaceful protest and assembly is a fundamental right and is protected by fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution and several international conventions.
“Violation of these conventions will lead to branding and singling out of Sri Lanka as a treaty violator not only of international conventions and the European Union but also the United Nations and the United States of America, which have already passed a resolution against Sri Lanka,” the petitioners said.
