The Walana Anti-Corruption Task Force has taken possession of a government land in the Aruwakkalu area of Wilpattu, along with property valued at over Rs. 200 million, following a raid on a large-scale illegal ilmenite mining, washing, and storage operation allegedly conducted under the protection of two powerful ministers from the previous government.
According to police sources, the Task Force has obtained detailed information about the organized group behind the racket, which includes millionaire businessmen and politicians. Investigations are now underway to apprehend those involved.
Acting Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya received intelligence regarding the operation, prompting a raid on August 9 by a team led by Walana Anti-Corruption Task Force OIC, Indika Weerasinghe.
The illicit mining activities have reportedly been ongoing since 2019 under tight security, with protective fences erected to prevent public access.
The Department of Archaeology has confirmed that the excavation site contains numerous prehistoric artifacts. Police also report that the smugglers carried out ilmenite mining without obtaining the necessary permits from the Geological and Mining Bureau.
Investigations further revealed that five large reservoirs, each spanning approximately two acres, had been constructed at the site. Authorities estimate that the country has lost more than USD 100 million in foreign exchange due to this smuggling operation.
