Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam Passes Resolution for Tamil Eelam Independence Referendum

Actor-turned-politician ‘Thalapathy’ Vijay’s newly established party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), has passed a resolution urging an independence referendum to “bring about a permanent solution for Eelam Tamils.”

The resolution was approved during the TVK’s executive committee meeting on Sunday, as part of a broader set of 26 resolutions. One of the key demands was for a Tamil Eelam referendum.

The resolution further stated that foreign policy regarding Sri Lanka should be developed in collaboration with the Tamil Nadu government. Additionally, it called for the appointment of a Tamil individual as India’s ambassador to Sri Lanka.

The party also raised concerns over the alleged “attacks on Tamil Nadu fishermen” by Sri Lankan security forces, emphasizing that the issue of fishing rights in the Palk Strait should be approached as a “humanitarian” matter. The resolution stressed that Tamil fishermen should not be arrested or imprisoned, and pledged that the party would “stand in solidarity with the fishermen” to halt the assaults.

These resolutions were passed just days after the party’s inaugural rally, which is believed to have drawn hundreds of thousands of attendees.

Other resolutions passed during the meeting addressed issues such as the promotion of Tamil language rights in Tamil Nadu, the abolition of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), and the closure of liquor shops in the state.

Vijay has previously expressed support for the Tamil Eelam liberation cause. In 2008, amidst the Mullivaikkal Tamil genocide, Vijay participated in a one-day hunger strike where he declared, “Let freedom dawn for Eelam Tamils.” He added, “This plea is not just for my fans, but for all those who carry the spirit of Tamil identity within them.” He further remarked, “We are tiger cubs!”
